Crossbite

Crossbite happens when a top tooth or several top teeth, bite inside the bottom teeth. This usually occurs at the sides and/or front of the mouth. It is important that crossbite be corrected as soon as it is diagnosed. This will prevent other problems from occurring.

These other problems are:

  • Bone loss and gum disease
  • Early teeth wear
  • Loss of symmetric jaw development
  • Abnormal chewing styles
  • Unattractive smile

Orthodontic correction of crossbite

Each case of crossbite must be evaluated and treated uniquely. A crossbite that involves just one tooth can be corrected with either a retainer or braces. However, when the crossbite involves several teeth, the dental arch must be enlarged with braces, expanders, or any other intra-oral device.
